Private Instruction

One-on-one scuba coaching that meets you exactly where you are

Learning to dive is exciting—and it can also feel like a lot. New gear, new skills, a new environment, and a brand‑new way of breathing. If you’re the kind of person who learns best with more time, more attention, or a plan built around your specific goals, private instruction is the simplest way to make scuba feel comfortable and clear.

At Pacific Reef Dive School, private instruction means you get our full focus. We’ll slow down when you want to slow down, repeat skills until they feel automatic, and move forward when you’re ready—not when the clock says it’s time.

Is private instruction right for you?

Private coaching isn’t “only for nervous divers.” It’s for anyone who wants a more personal pace and a more efficient learning path.

You’ll probably love private instruction if you:

  • Want extra time to build confidence before moving on
  • Prefer learning one-on-one rather than in a group
  • Like asking lots of questions (we do too)
  • Want to focus on specific skills instead of following a set class rhythm
  • Feel anxious about water skills, equipment, or breathing underwater
  • Have a tight schedule and need a plan that fits your availability

And if you’re already enrolled in a course but feel like you’d benefit from additional coaching, private sessions are a great way to smooth out the learning curve without pressure.

What we can focus on (you set the priorities)

Private instruction is flexible by design. We’ll start by listening—what feels easy, what feels confusing, and what you want your diving to look like.

Common private-session goals include:

  • Comfort and control underwater: calm breathing, relaxed movement, better awareness
  • Skill refinement: repeating core skills until they feel natural—not rushed
  • Equipment confidence: understanding your gear, setup, and how everything works together
  • Buoyancy and trim fundamentals: building the base that makes diving feel effortless
  • Mask comfort: clearing, removing/replacing, and staying relaxed through it
  • Personal coaching for “sticking points”: whatever you’re working through, we’ll coach it patiently

If you’re not sure what you need, that’s completely normal. We’ll help you identify the highest-impact skills first so your time feels productive and encouraging.

Private vs. small-group: how to choose

Small-group training can be fun and motivating. You get the energy of learning alongside other new divers, and you may enjoy the shared experience.

Private instruction is different. It’s ideal when you want:

  • A pace designed around you (not the group average)
  • More repetitions and feedback on the skills that matter most for your comfort
  • Less performance pressure—no comparing, no waiting your turn, no feeling rushed
  • A customized plan that fits your learning style and your schedule

If you’re torn, tell us what you’re aiming for and how you like to learn. We’ll give you a straight recommendation—private, small-group, or a mix of both.

What to expect: how a private plan comes together

We keep this simple and supportive.

  1. We talk through your goals and experience. Total beginner? Coming back after time away? Working through a specific skill? All good.
  2. We build a session plan. We’ll outline what we’ll cover and how we’ll progress so you’re never guessing what “success” looks like.
  3. We coach actively. You’ll get clear demonstrations, calm problem-solving, and real-time feedback—plus time to repeat skills until you own them.
  4. We wrap with next steps. We’ll recommend what to practice, what to focus on next, and whether you’d benefit from another private session or can transition smoothly into a group setting.

Private instruction can be a one-time confidence boost or part of a longer progression—either way, you’ll always know the purpose of the session.

How to prepare (so you get the most out of it)

You don’t need to “get ready” by being perfect—you just need to show up open to learning.

A few things that help:

  • Share your concerns honestly. If something makes you uneasy, we want to know.
  • Tell us your timeline. Planning for a trip? Want to finish by a certain date? We’ll work backward with you.
  • Arrive curious, not stressed. We’ll take it step-by-step.

If you have your own gear, we’re happy to incorporate it so you feel confident with what you’ll actually dive. If you’re still figuring out gear, we’ll help you make sense of it without the overwhelm.

Request a private instruction plan

Ready for a quieter, more personal way to learn scuba—or to get past a skill that’s holding you back?

Reach out and tell us:

  • Your current experience level (brand new is perfect)
  • What you want help with (or what feels challenging)
  • A few dates/times that could work for you

We’ll respond with a recommended approach and options for scheduling. If private instruction isn’t the best fit, we’ll point you toward the right next step—because the goal is the same either way: helping you become a calm, capable diver who genuinely enjoys being underwater.
