If it’s been a while since your last dive, you’re not alone—and you’re not “starting over.” A refresher session is simply the fastest, most confidence-building way to bring your scuba skills back online so you can enjoy your dives again (instead of spending the whole time wondering if you remember everything).
At Pacific Reef Dive School, our refresher is built for certified divers who want a supportive reset: smart pacing, clear coaching, and time to practice the skills that matter. Whether you’re returning after a long break, switching environments, or just want a safety-focused tune-up before a trip, we’ll meet you where you are and help you feel ready.
Do you need a refresher?
A refresher is a great idea if any of these sound like you:
- You’re certified, but it’s been a while since your last dive and you feel rusty.
- You remember the basics, but your buoyancy, weighting, or breathing control doesn’t feel smooth.
- You want to review emergency procedures before diving again.
- You’re coming back after new gear, a new buddy, or a new dive environment.
- You’re not nervous exactly… but you’d enjoy diving a lot more with a confidence boost.
If you’re unsure, that’s normal. Tell us when you last dove, where you’re planning to dive next, and how you’ve been feeling about getting back in. We’ll help you choose the right next step—refresher, guided diving, or a continuing-education course.

What we cover in a refresher session
We focus on real-world readiness: the skills and habits that make diving relaxed and safe.
You can expect a session that typically includes:
A quick knowledge reset We’ll revisit the fundamentals that keep you safe and comfortable—things like dive planning basics, hand signals, buddy procedures, and the “why” behind key safety practices. No lecture-marathon—just what you actually need to dive well.
Gear familiarity and setup If setting up scuba gear feels fuzzy, we’ll slow it down and make it simple. You’ll practice assembling, checking, and using your equipment confidently, with emphasis on buddy checks and clean, repeatable habits.
Core in-water skills We’ll review and practice the essentials at a pace that matches your comfort level. That often includes:
- Controlled descents/ascents and buoyancy fundamentals
- Mask and regulator skills (the stuff people most want to re-practice)
- Air-sharing and other standard safety drills
- Trim, propulsion basics, and comfort techniques that reduce effort and stress
Better buoyancy = better dives Most returning divers don’t need “more bravery”—they need better buoyancy and weighting. We’ll help you troubleshoot what’s been challenging and dial in the little adjustments that make a huge difference in comfort, gas use, and enjoyment.
Monterey-area re-orientation (without the overwhelm)
If you’re coming back to diving in the Monterey area—or you’re visiting and want to feel prepared—we’ll help you re-orient to local-style diving in a practical way. Think: how to approach a dive day smoothly, what to pay attention to in your planning, and how to make decisions that keep the dive comfortable.
We won’t bury you in jargon or assume you remember everything from your open water course. The goal is simple: help you feel like you belong in the environment you’re diving.
Our safety expectations (so you know what to expect from us)
A refresher should feel supportive and professional. We keep things clear, calm, and safety-forward.
Here’s what that means in practice:
- We encourage questions and normalize skill rust—no judgment.
- We focus on controlled, repeatable technique rather than rushing through a checklist.
- We emphasize buddy awareness, communication, and decision-making—not just “doing skills.”
- We’ll recommend the right next step if a refresher isn’t enough for your goals (or if you’re ready for more).
What to bring—and how to prepare
You don’t need to “study” to succeed in a refresher. A little preparation just helps you get more value from your time:
- Bring your certification information and any logbook notes you have.
- If you have your own gear, bring what you plan to dive so we can help you get comfortable with it.
- Think about what you want most from the session (buoyancy? mask skills? general confidence?)—we’ll tailor our focus.
Not sure what to bring or whether you should use personal gear? Ask us. We’ll talk it through.
Ready to feel current again?
If you’re certified and want to get back to fun, easy diving, a refresher session is the perfect on-ramp.
Reach out and tell us:
- When you last dove
- Your certification level (if you know it)
- Where you’d like to dive next and what you want to feel more confident about
We’ll help you choose the right refresher plan and get you back in the water with confidence.
